Create a Verse (O)
This activity is good for children ages 8 to 11.
Beforehand Preparation
Sing the song through. Choose a concept for your new verse. (An example would be to write a verse for the song "Follow the Prophet" CS 110 about a prophet of your choice, or to write a new verse for the song "Oh, What Do You Do in the Summertime?" CS 245.) Write some phrases and try to rhyme the words at the end of the sentences.
Activity
Tell the children you are going to work together to write a new verse to the song. (At this point you can split into smaller groups, or you can work together as a large group.) Sing a verse of the song for them. Tell the children what the subject of the verse will be and ask them for ideas. You might want to sing their ideas back to them to a phrase of the song. (This is where your beforehand preparation will come in handy.) Write your new verse on a chalkboard or whiteboard and sing it all together.
Benefits of this Activity
This activity encourages divergent and creative thinking (See Chapter Ten). Good for learners who use words to learn (See Chapter Five). Great for active participation in the learning process (See Chapter One).
